Curriculum Overview

The wellness curriculum consists of three different units during each trimester, team sports, core-cardio, and resistance training. During the second and third trimester a health unit is added one day during the week.

The wellness curriculum is fitness based, which is more beneficial for the student's health. Students are encouraged to raise their heart rates to a beneficial level during the cardio and resistance training workouts. One of the main tools we use to measure student success is heart rate monitors. Each student has their own heart rate strap which is worn on the days when the students will be participating in core-cardio or resistance training. The students track the amount of time they spend in their target heart rate zone and report it to me at the conclusion of class. This system allows each student to know exactly what their grades are at the end of each class period.

During the resistance training the students complete a training log that tracks each machine, the amount weight that was lifted at each machine, and how many repetitions the student performed at each resistance machine. 6th grade students spend a significant amount time on proper resistance training form and safety. 7th grade does an in-depth review of proper resistance training form and safety and moves on to performing a number of different sets and reps during their resistance workouts. 8th grade does an in-depth review of proper resistance training form and safety and progresses to an endurance and/or strength training routine. The endurance or strength training routine is decided by the students cardiovascular pacer test score.
